For xmas, my DIL gave me a photo album she had started for me. It was a photo album about me.
It was one of the most thoughtful gifts I've ever received. She really is a great addition to the family and brings things to us that we are lacking. This is a good example.
I'm horrible about photos. I'm horrible about having mine taken. I find it difficult to make myself look at past photos, but I always enjoy it when I do. I have no photos decorating the house. Daughter gets after me about that and she's right. Some friends recently moved and we went to see the house about a week after they moved in. There were family photos all over many walls....generations past plus current. I thought it was the neatest thing.
Going through the album she made, I see that in many of the photos, I am having fun - and that overrides much of my feelings of being very non-photogenic. The other thing that stood out were the people I was having fun with - and how many of them are no longer a part, or very active part, of my life. I was quite nostalgic there for a while. But I woke up the other morning feeling very odd and things on my mind were how those people had hurt me - things previously thought forgotten.
I don't know if it was the remnants of a dream I was unaware of, my brain warning me to be careful and not let nostalgia make me do something I'd regret, or my brain working against me and preventing me from doing something that would be beneficial. I'll never know :)
When I was getting some therapy, I was told that very few relationships survive a change in boundaries. Once boundaries are established, seldom are both parties willing to accept a change.
I once was a doormat. There is no way I want to go back to that - and many of those people in the album are people who would only accept me that way. Even a couple of people who I thought were on my side, and who encouraged me to be less of a doormat then, expected me to still be a doormat for them. But seeing the pictures of people, well, I wish they could accept me the way I am now.
I go back to work next week....that's probably a good thing. I've had too much time to think lately :)

No, no New Year's Resolutions
No resolutions, but I am thinking about things I'd like to change or accomplish.
Will 2007 be the year I finally discard what I, not affectionatly, call The Zoloft Thirty? My mindset is to make changes after the cruise. My rationalization for that is that a week of gluttonly after shedding weight would screw with my metabolism and make it even harder. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I'm developing an aversion to wastefulness. Of the "stuff" variety. I want to continue the process started with filling a dumpster. Of course, the momentum has totally disappeared for that around here, but it was expected. Just looking around this room (my office), the main thing to deal with would be yarn and books. I took all of my library books back and want to start reading the unread books on the shelves, many of them gifts I had asked for and someone was kind enough to give to me. Having them sit here unread is starting to feel wasteful to me. I won't say I'm not going to the library until they are all read, or anything like that, but I want to make it a priority to read what I have.
About the yarn. I know I won't use all that is here. I will resort what I have and maybe that will make them appear more usable to me. I will also officially give up on the aran sweater I started when I first got back to knitting.

I still love the cables in it, but I have learned a lot since I worked on it. I want to make a kick ass aran sweater, with better yarn and my own cable designs. This is a lionbrand pattern with lionbrand yarn. It has a drop shoulder (I hate the way those look). I need to knit more densely. I'm going to take the leftover yarn and make aran scarves, of my own designs. This was a hard one to give up, but it's time :)
I'm not going to wander the LYSs for fun. That leads to impulse buying. I won't say I'm not going to buy yarn, but I will only buy for specific projects, and those projects will be worked on until finished.
We'll see how that one goes.....getting them finished is so hard for me.

Happy Holidays

Things are winding down after Christmas. We took dinner to son and DIL on Saturday and had a very nice time. They are neat people :)
Sunday my inlaws came here for dinner.
Christmas day was nice and relaxed. I never even got dressed! We had plenty of leftovers and I got started watching my much desired boffal dvds.
Baby knits were well received by son and DIL! There was even a request for a xmas stocking for next year :)

I'm sitting here waiting for son to call me back saying everything is ok. He called to say he was taking DIL to hospital because she was worried that Baby B isn't moving like she has been. Odds are this is the normal slowdown of activity, but I'm waiting on confirmation.
[Edit - called son, he said to relax. Looks like a case of lazy baby :)]
DIL and I were discussing my birth experiences the other day. I'd forgotten how my variety is unusual.
People used to tell me I should write about it. People used to tell me I should write about other things I've dealt with too, but I'm not a writer and I digress.
Anyway.
Child #1. I had 3 contractions and then an epidural and felt nothing. He weighed 6lbs 15 oz. Born on his due date.
Child #2. Thinking I had missed out on "something", and thinking that I was going to have small babies, I decided to go the natural route. So the second was born 5 days after his due date, no drugs at all, and weighed - 9 lbs 6 oz. The universe was chuckling at me....
Child #3. In spite of everything, the plan was go natural again as long as doctor kept assuring me baby was not huge. 3 weeks AFTER due date, emergency C-section, totally knocked out, and she weighed 7lbs 11 oz.
I can now chuckle with the universe about it all :)

Another post about food??
This time it's crab cakes. I think I should officially give up any hope that when a restaurant in Ohio lists Marlyand Style Crab Cakes on the menu, that it will resemble in any way a

A friend and I tried yet again last night at a place we hadn't been before. He is from the DC area, I have visited there and was introduced to the proper version. Last night he ordered the "Maryland" version, I ordered the "East Coast" version. We received our orders and simultaneously sighed as we tried to hide our disappointment......yet again. They looked like this.

As we compared, and realized we had the same thing, only with different toppings, he suggested I order from a place in Hagerstown, saying that's near an airport :P
I just don't get why all of these Ohio places say "Maryland Style" when it is nothing like that. How does that benefit them, other than to get suckers like Friend and I to keep trying? We certainly don't try at a place more than once.

There is something weird about these oreos. I bought a package about a week ago. After a day or two, I went to get one and they were almost gone. Daughter asked for more. I couldn't find the winter ones so I got the regular ones. She said they were not nearly as good. The next shopping trip, I found them and bought a couple of packages.
Now we currently have 3 different types of homemade cookies in the house. I have found myself choosing the red oreo over the others. I have seen husband and daughter eating them too. Why in the world would be be choosing oreos over great homemade cookies??
Work is winding up for the month - and the year! Just a couple more days. I usually have to ask extra questions they call the monthly supplement. This month it's about food. It is very difficult to ask low to moderate income families questions about whether their kids have enough food without them being offended. I usually strive for a neutral tone....for these questions, I'm finding that sounding bored and disinterested works better. I'll be glad when it's done.
I went to a couple LYSs, thinking I could buy the Elizabeth I scarf patterns, after seeing Del's version.
Both places informed me that it is a Knitpicks pattern and I had to get it from there. The vibe changed immediately and I felt I was regarded with a bit of contempt. The thing is, I knew they were both wrong and that the pattern is available from other places. But apparently not these two. It really is annoying when someone gets snooty about something - and they are WRONG. Oh well.
I tried coming up with a pattern on my own, but my brain is not functioning in the way it needs to focus. i.e. sleep deprivation fuzzies and lace knitting do not go together.
So with winding down the year, I want to finish up the Baby B socks I'm working on, get the hoodie put together, and have all the current baby projects ready before I start to think about working on anything else. Maybe something for me next :P
I'm at a weird place with regards to knitting. I want to design my own stuff. I want to always use the best yarn for the project. And I want to automatically be able to do those things :) I have so much to learn.

Rod Stewart - Ooh-la-la
This is my new theme song. It will replace Numb, which was my theme song for a couple of years. "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger. I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was stronger. Ooh-la-la".
Rod is singing about more specific types of relationships, but for me, it's just about people and life in general. I guess as long as a person is growing, this would generally be true. But for me, now, it sums up quite a lot!
I want to go see a nifty light display I read about it in the paper today. I wonder when the traffic jams will start. I love xmas lights!!!
You know, I go through a sad time around Thanksgiving, but I can usually bounce back to enjoy xmas. I find myself feeling thankful for all kinds of things. Maybe I'm just on a 3 week brain delay :)
We went to visit son and DIL on Sunday. She's feeling a little better, but she can't do much at all. It is such a great feeling to see your adult child be such a neat person. Son is taking very good care of her. The house was spotless, it would even pass mom's standards :P If you knew how son used to keep his room, you would understand why I even noticed :) I was thinking about how the husband was so great with babies and young children. He's so looking forward to this little girl being born. I can easily see my son being the same with his baby. DIL mentioned that son has gone with her to every single doctor's visit, just because he wants to.
Oh - the scenes from the Hugh Laurie video are from the movie Maybe Baby. There are two versions of the dvd. One is the original or director's cut, the other is the US version. Before knowing about the different versions, I bought the US version. Most of the good, fun scenes have been deleted from the US version (Boo!). The Youtube video included some of the missing scenes.

Tea Time!
A favorite time of day. A simple pleasure I greatly appreciate :)

I had planned on baking the pie for Thanksgiving, but it was getting to where there was going to be more desserts than people. So I baked it last night instead. Apple, caramel, walnut. I did not need to use the whole tub of Marzetti apple dip though.
The most recent dish discovery.

These were given to me by my MIL when we bought our first house. She said the FIL gave them to her early in their relationship (that's the best I can remember).
Instead of needing a replacement cabinet for dishes, I really need an additional one.
It's starting to dawn on me that I need to start thinking about xmas shopping.....but first, some tea!

I got up early with the dogs today and Lucy didn't go back to sleep. I decided I could skip working today since I am ahead of schedule and thought it would be a great chance to get more things organized around here but I'm just too tired. I'm counting the minutes until my tea time :)
Daughter showed me this - she understands my Gregory Peck admiration :) She's a big fan of Family Guy.

Some pics
The Night Light bought at A Christmas Story House

The Ovaltine

The dumpster is now gone. I'm still trying to get some things organized that were discovered after all of that stuff was removed. I found these plates.

These are the dishes from when we were married. I still like them and have been using the small plates and soup bowls all of these years. The dinner plates are huge though and a normal amount of food looks lost on them. They are now in sight in case I want to use them.
This is definitely in the way now that the xmas stuff is coming out.

It's pretty challenging so I don't want to undo the progress I've made. The problem is, I only look at it if I'm home and sitting down for lunch.
The shower for DIL has been cancelled. She's just not up to it. She was in bed for about 10 days, but she's up moving around more now. I suggested they give all the future grandparent phone numbers to all other future grandparents. When she gave my numbers to her mom, her mom said that she would call me right away after they call her. DIL told her mother that I may get the first call.
Some potentially weird dynamics to be worked out here. I plan to stay back and be cordial as long as DIL's mother follows their rules. If she breaks any, I will be right with them backing them up, if necessary.
Here's a baby hat I made. The yarn was bought to be made into socks. The colors would have worked better as socks I think. I just started knitting without any pattern. I find my standards are rising faster than my skills. Patience....patience....

I'm making baby socks to go with it. There is no more deadline to get these things done. I don't know if that's good or bad.
This is the hat I knit to go with the Irish Hiking Scarf. It looks cute on daughter, but she doesn't care for it. "It feels weird". So it will go into the bin of other things that don't measure up for one reason or another :)

My MIL asked for a xmas list for me. I was all cutesy and included pictures in the email I sent to her.
At the end, I added this picture...

Self returning to normal.....well, my normal anyway :)
DIL has been told to take it easy and drink more water. She was possibly dehydrated after having a horrible migraine over the weekend. Apparently too little fluid can cause contractions. I told son I now consider myself on alert :) I will start carrying my cell phone with me (it usually stays in my car). I will now be the calm one when things start to happen. This was like a jump start to my brain letting me know to get ready!
As predicted, I am not well rested this morning. I will try to be productive around here today before my work week crunch starts on Friday.

It's been a weird day.
The garage now holds two working vehicles - at the same time! I can't believe how much better it feels to not see the mess that was there before. Husband says he feels much better too. He has worked really hard on it, for several days. He found a few boxes of things I need to go through, like silver things that we got for wedding gifts that I had forgotten all about. Things were still boxed up from when we moved here.
I tried to accomplish some brain things, but I was having a very hard time focusing. I need more sleep. Daughter knew when I started trying and proceeded to interrupt me about 10 times in 10 minutes. It's like a radar within her.
I went to do some errands and told daughter she could park her car in the garage. She doesn't know it, but I plan on letting her park there unless I have to leave early in the morning sometime. And really, how often does that happen? :) Anyway, I got home to find out she had scratched her car pulling into the garage. The dumpster is still there in the way, and it is an awkward angle, and I don't think she's ever parked in a garage before.
Then she told me that DIL called and was going to the hospital. DIL was feeling really crappy and her back was hurting her so bad. Uh-oh. It's 6 weeks too soon. She's home now, but I was stressed all evening. I'm usually the calm one. Daughter finally told me to sit down and relax and not try to do anything! DIL had some contractions and they gave her a shot that stopped them.
She's to see her doctor tomorrow. I don't plan on catching any extra sleep tonight...
I know, technology is wonderful. I know 6 weeks early is not as dangerous as it used to be. I know if she's born now, she will probably be ok. My usual self would weigh all of that and take a wait and see stand. I'm not reacting my usual way. I now feel this baby is going to be born early....I just hope not too early.

A Christmas Story House
A man who lives in California bought the house in Cleveland that was used for the exterior shots in A Christmas Story because he loves the movie so much. He spent a couple of years and lots of money to restore it as much as possible to look like the house in the movie. Most of the interior scenes were done in Canada. This past weekend was the grand opening of the house. My daughter loves the movie, so it was a road trip to Cleveland! (which concluded my 3C city tour in 3 days. Cincy on Thursday, Columbus Friday (and pretty much every day - lol), then Cleveland on Saturday.

The rest of the pics can be seen here
I bought some Ovaltine and a leg lamp night light at the museum across the street, bought by the same man.
You can read about it here.

Here's the gang and the food :) (minus the FIL, who took the pic)

From left to right - Nephew B, Daughter S, Husband R, BIL R, SIL G, Moi, Nephew C, and MIL.
It was a nice, enjoyable evening. No drama. Tentative plans were made to have it here next year. SIL would rather drive a few hours than cook. I said if I have a living room by then, sure! Well, ok, the room actually exists, but it needs work just like the dining room needed work. You would think a year would be plenty of time....
Husband is filling dumpster with stuff from the garage. The Honda is scheduled to be removed from garage tomorrow. This is all good. My fantasy of getting rid of all of the extraneous stuff throughout the house has been destroyed though. A 20 ft dumpster - it will be filled with garage only junk. That blows my mind. I will never understand the mind of a pack rat.
I finished acrylic blanket, am still working on Irish Hiking scarf, and a hat to go with it. I haven't touched the hiking sock (no relation to scarf and hat) in quite a while. I may get back into knitting more this week.

The Not Me dining room

The More Me Dining Room

It will be the Me Dining Room after I can do the wainscoting, get a new light fixture, get a new cabinet for the dishes, and decorate the walls, but it feels a lot better already :)
My parents bought my grandmother this set of china and then my grandfather gave them to me when she died. I can't remember the last time I used them. I should use them...

This is the set of everyday dishes I don't use much either. I got the set when I worked at a store, something like 80% of and then a 10% discount. Maybe now that I know they are clean I will think to use these too.

This is a tray I can remember my aunt giving me when I was in elementary school and sick in bed for a few days. I do sometimes use this :)

It is yet another cold and dreary day. I think most days have been like this since mid-september. Ugh.
The dining room furniture is back in the dining room. I still need to wash all of the dishes before putting them back in the cabinet, but I don't think I'll get to it today. Husband and daughter both home, me not so energetic....why annoy myself trying? I'll try to get to it tomorrow, while they are working. Then pics.
The room definitely needs wainscoting to brighten it up a bit. Maybe after the garage is cleared out and there is some work space, I can start on that.
Yesterday I went to the mall and started to get into the xmas spirit. I went during The Game of The Century, figuring it was a last chance to go before the big crowds. I was surprised how many people were there - Bath and Body Works was very crowded. Gee, someone else had the same idea as me??
The end is in sight for the acrylic blanket for Baby B. My next project needs to be a yarn that feels good with natural needles. It's funny how my tastes have changed. I feel I should use some of my stash, but it's a lot of stuff I won't enjoy using much.
One of the most inadvertently humorous moments of my job this month - I was talking to a new household, asking names. Lady gave her name, a friend's name, and when it got to the third name, she said "Oh! We don't know his name! We call him "Dan". :) They have all lived there for 6 months. (fake name changed to CMA, with the confidentiality thing and all).

I didn't get dressed until 5pm today. It is a rainy, cold, and dreary day. This is to remind myself when I don't like my job, that the one perk I get can be quite a nice one. That being, I decide when I work (within their deadlines). So I snuggled on the couch with my dogs most of the day!
Husband told me this morning that he has ordered a dumpster to be brought here next week! He's been planning to clean out the garage for a couple of years now. It's full of trash. I'd post a pic, but it would be WAY too embarrassing. I just watched part of Dr. Phil today where the subject was pack rats. I should be happier about this, but I KNOW that once it is all cleared out, he will then very soon start filling it back up. Clutter causes me anxiety, clear space causes him anxiety.
When does a couple balancing each other out become non-stop compromising?? sigh I just don't have to energy to keep on top of it all like I did in the earlier years.
My son has asked me to bake some cookies for him and his wife. I said sure, then he added that he'd really like to be able to eat them the same day they are baked, saying he hasn't had cookies like mine for a long time. So of course, I'm going to make some - LOL. I think I'll take the dough to their house and bake them there. Maybe next week. Oh, they have also asked me to come and stay with them for a few days after Baby B is born! That will be so much fun!
Inlaws gave us their frequent flyer miles to use for getting to Fort Lauderdale for the cruise! Yay!
I like reading Carolyn Hax's advice column. She gets right to the bottom line and asks the questions people do their best to avoid asking themselves. Although variables are always different, the bottom line can apply to some of my own situations.
When looking through the LL Bean catalogue, I found myself wanting several coats. Not sure what's up with that :) Maybe so I could knit a bunch of scarves to go with them?
Oh yes, and how could I forget, even though it's old news - Yay Ohio!! :)
